The ignition interlock device will measure the amount of alcohol that is on your breath. If the device detects any alcohol, your car will not start. After the car starts, the ignition interlock device will require that you breathe into the device at random intervals. This will prove that you have not consumed any alcohol since you started the vehicle.

How long will I need an ignition interlock device?

This depends on the nature of your offense. For a first offense, usually, you will need an ignition interlock device for a month. With a second offense, you will need the device for two years. If the courts convict you of DUI more than three times, Colorado will consider you a habitual traffic offender and you will need to have an ignition interlock device for at least four years. You are responsible for paying for and maintaining your ignition interlock device. Failure to do this may mean you lose your driving privileges.
